Hazardous Waste Facility Permit

The WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP) consists of the Permit issued by the New Mexico Environment Department on October 16, 2006 and any modifications that have been approved for implementation. In addition, the DOE has issued clarifications to facilitate the implementation of portions of the permit. Generally, there is a lag of one to two weeks between the approval of a modification and its actual incorporation into the Permit. In order to assure that those implementing the permit have current information, the following documents should be consulted:

  • The Permit can be accessed by selecting the first entry below.
  • Approved modifications that have been incorporated into the permit can be accessed by selecting the second entry below.
  • Clarifications can be accessed by selecting the third entry below.
  • Proposed Permit modifications (DRAFTS) can be accessed by selecting the fourth entry below.
  • Current RCRA Class 1 modifications submitted for incorporation to the Permit can be accessed by selecting the fifth entry below.
  • Current RCRA Class 1* (star) modifications submitted to NMED requiring approval may be accessed by selecting the sixth entry below.
  • Other RCRA-related documentation can be accessed by selecting the seventh entry below.

WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit

Authorizes the U.S. Department of Energy to manage, store, and dispose of contact-handled transuranic mixed waste at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.  Mixed waste contains radioactive and chemically hazardous components.

These documents are NOT FINAL and have not been formally submitted to the permitting authority for approval. These Documents are subject to future change at the discretion of the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The DOE welcomes and encourages technical as well as general comments from members of the public during pre-submittal periods. Upon formal submittal of these documents to the permitting authority, the public may be afforded additional opportunities to provide comments to the permitting authority's administrative record.

Please note that comments submitted to the DOE during pre-submittal periods do not constitute submittal to the permitting authority's administrative record regarding any version of these documents that may subsequently be submitted to the permitting authority for its approval.
