Community, State and Congressional Support for WIPP as a host for Underground Experiments

With the economic benefit of additional scope at the WIPP facility and jobs for Southeastern New Mexico, the support of the local community for using WIPP as an underground research laboratory is very strong.  Indeed, the Regular 2001 Session of both the House and Senate of the State of New Mexico passed Memorials calling for DOE to continue to make the WIPP underground available to particle astrophysics experiments.  Read House Memorial 4Read Senate Memorial 9

Senator Pete Domenici wrote a letter of endorsement about the future use of WIPP for research purposes.

Former Governor Gary Johnson also endorsed WIPP's use as a underground research facility, and eloquently spoke on the generosity of the citizens of New Mexico to support national goals.
