Introduction to the Interactive CRA-2014

The interactive CRA-2014 was developed to assist reviewers and readers of the CRA-2014 to more quickly access and cross-reference the various cited bibliographic materials and navigate through the document. A variety of web technologies were employed in its development, enabling readers to browse through the document much as they would a typical web page.

Of these various web technologies, Extensible Markup Language (XML) is used most. XML provides a method of treating normal text-based documents much like a database, in which queries and filters can be applied to select specific portions of text.

Navigating the CRA-2014

The interactive CRA-2014 opens in your default web browser, whether that be Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera or Chrome. The main page utilizes active links as well as standard browser and keyboard buttons (Home, End, Backspace, Go Back, etc.). When selecting certain links, a new browser window or tab will open with the requested contents. If this link does not appear, look for it behind the current window or tab.

Four links are visible across the screen of the interactive CRA-2014. These links remain visible from any screen within the interactive CRA-2014, except when a document is being viewed. These four links are CRA-2014 Main, References, CFR Index, and Search CRA-2014.

The CRA-2014 Main link provides access to all the Sections and Appendices that make up the CRA-2014. Further down the main page, links to References [References and Other Bibliographic Works, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Compliance Certification Application 1996 (CCA), and Compliance Recertification Application 2004 (CRA-2004)] and Additional Resources [Search the CRA-2014, About the Interactive CRA-2014, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)] are found. Selecting any of these links replaces the current browser screen with the new contents.

Under the References section of the Main page, links to References and Other Bibliographic Works, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Compliance Certification Application 1996 (CCA), and Compliance Recertification Application 2004 (CRA-2004) are found. This provides the user direct access to each type of reference with the actual document and backlinks (locations within the CRA-2014) shown. All the documents may be found through the References and Other Bibliographic Works link and the top References link but more information and steps will be required to view the source and backlinks.

Under the Additional Resources section of the Main page, links to Search the CRA-2014, About the Interactive CRA-2014, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) are found. This Search link and the Search CRA-2014 link at the top of the page yield identical results. The About link and FAQ link open the same screen in different locations. These links provide answers and explanations to questions a user may have.

The References link is the same as the References and Other Bibliographic Works link found on the Main page. This link will bring up an alphabetic menu page of references used in the CRA-2004, sorted by unique author/agency name. Selecting an author brings up that author with associated works listed below. This page provides a link to the reference itself as well as a list with links to all locations within the CRA-2014 where it is cited. Data selected through links from this page will be presented in the second browser window or tab.

The CFR Index link at the top of each page may also be found under the References section of the Main page as Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This link opens a page with the CFR Parts Table of Contents listed on the right and a complete list of CFR sections cited within the CRA-2014. Upon selecting a specific CFR section, the current browser screen is replaced with the title information on the CFR section, a link to view the entire text of the CFR section, and a list of all citations to this CFR within the CRA-2014. In addition, alternate links are provided that, if access to the internet is available, will go directly to applicable government websites.

Clicking on the Search CRA-2014 link brings a search screen into the current browser window. Typing a search string into the small rectangle, then either hitting Enter or the magnifying glass to the right yields a list with links to the locations of the string entered. Double click on an entry to open the source in a new window or tab. The search halts when all files have been read or when 500 instances of the search string are found.
