EML Databases and Sample Archives

** Please note that all of the programs discussed here and on pages linked from here have been terminated and the information presented is out of date. These programs were conducted under the Laboratory's former name of the Environmental Measurements Laboratory (EML). EML is no longer the custodian of the physical sample archives listed in these databases. **

EML provides access to comprehensive computer databases of published data from its current and historic environmental programs and maintained an extensive library of samples associated with its research programs, in some cases going back well over 40 years. Sample types in the archive included: human bone, animal tissue and bone, vegetation, milk and food ash, soil, lake water and sediment, seawater and aerosol filters. Over 70,000 samples, including filters obtained from altitudes ranging from sea level to high in the stratosphere, were in this archive.

The data available on EML's website were gathered in a variety of programs sponsored by the United States Government. NUSTL Environmental Databases:

The EML Sample Databases are available in the form of downloadable Excel spreadsheets in zip file format.
  • Surface Air Sampling Program: Radioactivity measurements from 1957-1999 studying the spatial and temporal distribution of specific natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in the surface air

  • Global Fallout Deposition program: 90Sr and other isotope measurements from 1954-1996

  • Soil Sampling Database: Soil samples collected from 1953 to 1996 to monitor radioactive contamination from sources such as nuclear power plants, radioisotope mines and processing facilities, nuclear accidents and nuclear weapons development

  • Lake Sediment samples: Sediment cores and grab samples collected from 1979 to 1991 in a study of pollutants related to energy generation such as toxic heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic compounds formed during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels

  • High-Altitude Sampling Program: Radioactivity and trace gas measurements from 1957-1983, a research program to define and delineate the stratospheric reservoir of fission debris:
    • Project ASHCAN (balloon) high-altitude radioactivity measurements from 1957-1983
    • Project STARDUST (aircraft) high-altitude radioactivity measurements from 1957-1967
    • Project AIRSTREAM (aircraft) high-altitude radioactivity measurements from 1967-1983

  • Atmospheric Radon Measurements at Mauna Loa and Bermuda

  • Diet samples: Food samples collected in three U.S. cities and other locations from 1960-1991 in a program providing estimates of the intake of 90Sr by humans

  • Bone samples: Bone samples collected in four U.S. cities from 1961-1988 for the measurement of 90Sr and stable calcium in human bone
Other Databases:
  • At DOE's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
    • TRACDAB: a database of stratospheric trace gases collected during Project Airstream.
    • RANDAB: a database of the world's largest compilation of stratospheric and upper-tropospheric radionuclide data. (Note that this information is an earlier version and duplicative of the HASP databases, above).
